Portrait of character named Death the Kid

Information

Immortal, Shinigami, Meister It was never revealed in neither the anime or manga, what his age truly is. However, being that Shinigami may be over 800 years of age, and his brother, Asura, is nearly 800, it is likely that Kiddo is less than 200 years old or a little over. D

He is Patricia "Patti/Patty" Thompson's and Elizabeth "Liz" Thompson's Meister and Death's son. He was born from a fragment of Shinigami's soul, as was his older brother, Asura.

Being the son of Shinigami, Kid was singled out. The other students at Shibusen were afraid to get close to him not only because he was Shinigami's son, but because they were afraid that they'd get hurt. This continued until he became the meister of Liz and Patti. They became good comrades, and even helped Kid. Kid didn't, necessarily, experience friendship until he met the others. He is really grateful to have friends that are not afraid of him like the others at Shibusen.

Kid has obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, which is manifested as an obsession over perfection. Objects and surroundings that are symmetrical can distract him from missions, and he will usually start to break down and have fits if he notices asymmetrical objects around him. Thus if anything is wrong by any measurement (a picture frame crooked, or not folding his toilet paper, for example), he will try to correct it right away, even at the cost of the mission at hand. He is so obsessed with symmetry that Kid refuses to fight a battle unless everything is symmetrical, as he would be asymmetrical holding only one gun. Even if an enemy is symmetrical in appearance, he will refuse to fight it and harm its symmetry. The fact that the left half of his bangs is marked with three white stripes causes him much stress. As a result of his OCD, Kid can be very hard on himself if the asymmetry of the stripes in his hair are pointed out by someone, calling himself "useless asymmetrical garbage". Kid, trying to make himself completely symmetrical, tried to dye his hair once, but the Sanzu Lines continued to reappear. This is because his reaper body rejects all forms of chemicals and toxins, including artificial coloring like hair dye. The Index of the Book of Eibon referred to this obsession as Madness of Order.

His favorite number is 8, not only for its symmetry, but for the fact it divides out evenly. An example of one of his fits, and his love for the number 8, can be shown when he met Soul on his first day of DWMA. When Soul said that if Kid had arrived at 7 like he was suppose to he could look around himself. Instead of focusing on the entire comment.. Kid replied " "No, it can't be seven! Say eight, dammit! Eight is better! It's physically impossible to cut the number seven in half and make it symmetrical! It has to be eight instead! Eight cut vertically or horizontally stays perfectly symmetrical! Take it back, I beg of you! Please say eight! Please!", only to become further distressed when Black Star broke one of the spikes tips jutting out of his fathers, perfectly symmetrical, school.

Despite that his father wears a completely asymmetrical cloak, Kid is not bothered by it at all, being that his love for his father outweighs his OCD. He also doesn't seem to mind that his Death God Martial Art- "Stance of Sin" requires him to hold his arms in asymmetrical position. Showing that there are some things he can tolerate.

He is usually very mature and precise in his ways. Kid is naturally calm and collected, and as such is perfectly fine with other people making their own decisions when it comes to symmetry or otherwise, even if he disagrees with their choices. However, there are times when his obsession with symmetry can greatly affect his usually calm personality and cause him to break down into childish fits.

Due to his serious personality, Kid is unaffected by nudity. While other male characters get nose bleeds, Kid does not. During a battle with a female "madness clown" who was trying to distract Kid with her nearly naked body, Patti says, "Kid-kun is one of those perverts that gets distracted only when you make him rub your breasts! This won't affect him!", but isn't actually because he is not a pervert, and is more matured than boys his age. Considering Patti is not the smartest person in the world she would think like this. When Kid had to return to DWMA, in order to get back to the fight on the moon sooner, Kid had no problems walking in the girls bathroom to help, only to be dragged out by Liz. Later in the Death Room, Kid is shown to have blood coming out of one side of his nose and mouth, having been punched by either Liz or Kim.

Of course, Kid's being unaffected by nudity may also be the result of being A-Sexual. Given that his father created both him and Asura A-sexually, and Shinigami shows no interest in either gender, even when Spirit hired Blair and her friends to entertain them during their meeting, he showed no interest and was rather confused by their flirtation and later angry at them for goofing off when they should be discussing the rescue of his son. An example to prove this is when Kid had visited Soul and Maka's apartment, when Blair's towel fell off instead of getting a nosebleed like Soul or Black Star, Kid looked rather disgusted.

He doesn't seem to have any problem socializing and genuinely cares for his friends. He is seen expressing concern about Soul's scar at one point, and threatens Gopher that he will never forgive him if he hurts Maka after Gopher threatens to hurt her in revenge for their original fight. He also threw Patti and Liz away from him before being sucked into the Book of Eibon, not wanting them to be taken with him.

Kid generally seems to be somewhat introverted, often working on missions on his own and not having as close of a friendship with Maka or Black☆Star as Maka and Black☆Star have with each other.

It is mentioned by Maka that it is normally hard to match soul wavelengths with more than one weapon, but Kid as a highly skilled Meister is able to do so since Liz and Patti have a strong connection with each other and admiration for Kid who gave them a better life.

His father, Death, has mentioned that Kid is a Shinigami ("death god") and does not need to collect souls, but Kid says he wants to make a weapon of his own specifications. His father also says that since he uses two weapons and the guns do not count as a set, he will have to collect twice as many souls: 198 evil human souls and two Witch souls instead of 99 souls and one witch soul. However, he seems perfectly fine with this.

Kid shares a side rivalry with Black☆Star, and seems to be stronger, however it is possible that he is more susceptible to madness than Black☆Star or Maka, for both were able to pull themselves from madness while he quickly succumbed to the Madness of Order in the Book of Eibon, while Black☆Star is able to quickly snap himself out of it. This may be because of his OCD, or simply because of his strong drive to create a perfect world. It is also possible that being a Shinigami, Kid was weaker against the Madness.

Although Kid's obsession with symmetry often hinders his performance and focus on missions, he still has good intentions. He wants to follow in his dad's footsteps and help make the world a more peaceful place that is safe from evil.Family:Shinigami: Shinigami created Kid from a fragment of his soul. With Shinigami as his father, Kid already has death god powers and doesn't need to train his weapons, but he does so anyway. Where Kid is generally serious and reserved, his father is not, unless the situation calls for it. Kid has commented on this but doesn't stress it. He refers to Shinigami as 'honorable father' (chichiue), who he has been named after as it has been shown that Shinigami's name was "Death" when he was younger. Shinigami cares for Kid, calling his stripes 'cute' and telling him when Kid had apologized that he made his father worry that the only thing that matters is that he is safe. He also expresses his pride in Kid in recent chapters, saying he's a splendid Shinigami already. Likewise, Kid cares for Shinigami as well, expressing sorrow at his death. Also, Kid is not bothered at all by his father's asymmetrical cloak. This is most likely due to his immense respect for his father. When Shinigami's death occurs, Kid doesn't realize until he returns, showing great grief, only to be disturbed by Excalibur. As Kid takes his father's place, he takes great pride in the role and speaks of how he will honor his father as he takes his place.Asura: Death the Kid has a strong hatred towards him in general, and his hatred grew further during fight on the Moon when Asura was revealed to be his older brother.Partners:Liz: The eldest of the Thompson sisters. Kid picked her as one of his partners, due to the ability to become matching pistols with her sister, which fits perfectly with his symmetry obsession. Kid's biggest problem with her is that her human form doesn't match her sister's, with Patti being more endowed, shorter, and having short hair. Kid is very unsatisfied with the fact that her breasts aren't the same size as her sister, and thus asymmetrical. Though she sometimes gets exasperated with Kid's obsession with symmetry, the two do seem to share a rather strong bond with each other. When Kid gets captured by Eibon (Noah), Kid throws Liz out-of-the-way along with Patti so as not to allow them to be harmed. Liz attempts to force Eibon to give Kid back. When this attempt fails, she doesn't pursue Eibon, which causes Patti to call her a coward, to which Liz replies that she doesn't want to lose Kid, but she can't have Patti die on her as well. She also states that Kid was the reason for her reforming, for it she's grateful, and later she ends up crying over him after reflecting of what he has done for Patti and her and how she has never thanked him for it. In the beginning when Liz and Patti first joined Kid, she joined only because of his wealth and the power and status he could offer her. After being with him for so long, she begins to respect him and care for him, showing how much she has changed.

Patti: The youngest of the Thompson sisters. Kid picked her as one of his partners, due to the ability to become matching pistols with her sister, which fits perfectly with his symmetry obsession. Kid's biggest problem with her is that her human form doesn't match her sister's, with Patti being more endowed, shorter, and having short hair. Patti is always seemingly carefree, and also seems to share a strong bond with Kid, as seen when Kid gets captured by Eibon (Noah), where Kid throws her and her sister to safety instead of saving himself and she uncharacteristically calls Liz (who Patti rather admires and looks up to) a coward for not trying to go after Kid. A running gag in the series is when Kid goes into a fit of depression related to symmetry, where as Liz either berates or tries to cheer Kid up, Patti simply ends up into a fit of laughter as she watches, though she often comforts Kid alongside her sister.Friends:

Maka: Little interaction is shown between Maka and Kid, but it is established that they work well together as calm and strategic fighters. Their Soul Perception abilities are also similar (though Maka's are stronger). Kid showed strong disgust when Gopher attempted to assassinate Maka, and therefore highly values her friendship. While fighting Asura on the moon, Kid was in a dilemma on whether he should connect all three Lines of Sanzu on his head. However after Maka assures him that he will be fine, he connects them as he stated that Maka's resolve was what kept him fighting. Maka is also shown to have deep trust in Kid, as she trusts he will not succumb to evil ways if he were to become a Shinigami. She defends Kid when Asura accuses him of becoming the same way he is, saying Kid is kind-hearted with good intentions unlike Asura.Soul: Kid has no obvious opinions shown toward Soul, but they are friends as at some points, Kid shows concern over Soul's wounds. In later chapters, it is shown that their friendship had slightly grown, as Soul tells Kid not to die on them, as his mission was much more dangerous. In return, they fist bumped with their right hands but Kid insisted they do it with the left also and Soul stated that he would never change.Black☆Star: Just like everyone else, Kid finds Black☆Star's need to be loud and noticed highly annoying. Being the son of Shinigami, Kid is seen as a god, which frustrates Black☆Star at some points, as he is striving to become a person to surpass God, leading to conflicts between the two. Despite that, Kid seems to be the only person who took Black☆Star seriously instead of ignoring him, responding when Black☆Star angrily asked whether Kid was looking down on him that he was not, and he would take him on any time. Kid is also shown to find Black☆Star an "interesting guy" when he claimed that he would surpass god, and an unusual change from students assuming they could never beat him. After Black☆Star battled Mifune for the second time, Kid shows concern for him, especially when he fails his Soul Menace. When Black☆Star saves him from the Madness in the Book of Eibon, he smiles and claims that he owes Black☆Star, expressing surprise when Black☆Star admits he wishes to help Kid create the perfect world. After they escape the Book, they seem to be on good terms as they team up to fight Noah, all rivalry and tension in their relationship gone, and possibly starting a good friendship.Tsubaki: Other than confusion about how Tsubaki tolerates her partner Black☆Star, Kid and Tsubaki get along fine. He also felt frustrated when Tsubaki didn't notice Free's illusion, yet the two of them don't interact very often.Crona: The two do not seem to have much interaction throughout the anime or manga, but they do seem to be friends on some level.Kim: There is little to no interaction between these two characters until Kid is recalled from the battle on the Moon and returns to Shibusen to prepare negotiations with the witches. To which he learns Kim and the rest of the group are taking showers and getting ready. Kid fears Kim and Jacqueline will take too long, (Thus the possibility of losing the battle on the Moon or the Death Scythes), so he goes in the Shibusen women's shower to help them bathe quicker, as he is seen holding a sponge, sleeves rolled up. To which Kim and Jacqueline are embarrassed, Kim calls Kid a pervert, and Kid is dragged out of the showers by Liz. Later, when Kid, Eruka, Free, Kim, Risa, and Alisa are captured by Mabaa (the leader of the witches) and are all sentenced to death (Kid being sentenced to death one million times), Kid mentions in his speech that he is,"In the middle of a Physical Relationship" with Kim. As Kim responds with embarrassment "It was only that One Time." This is referring to the shower incident, with Kid using it as an excuse to show that the prejudice between witches and Meisters can be overcome.

Death the Kid is always dressed in a refined way, mostly because of his status as a Shinigami. He limits his main wardrobe to a standard black suit with white rectangles, until later in the manga series when he is seen wearing a white coat instead of a black one. The rectangles are placed in a way that is completely symmetrical. There are at least six small rectangles along the seam where the sleeves attach to the jacket, and four small rectangles run along the front of his jacket. It is possible that these shapes could be replacements for buttons. His undershirt is a formal white dress shirt, and a metallic skull rests under his collar, and could be used as a tie. His color scheme is meant to copy his father's, where the only color variation between black and white is the color of his eyes. When going out on missions, Kid will typically cover himself in a cloak and mask that makes him look like a smaller version of his father.

In the manga, Kid's suit has now been replaced with the Spartoi uniform consisting of a white dress shirt, black tie, a white sports jacket, like that of Liz and Patti's, with a white dress or suit jacket over it with the Spartoi symbol on the left sleeve, navy pants and white shoes.

When under the influence of madness, five black lines appear over Kid's mouth. These give the appearance of his mouth being sewn shut. They also make Kid's face look like that of a skull. His outfit consisting of a black shirt, black pants and some white ruffles in front. He changes into this outfit every time he initiates his madness. (This only appears in the manga)

Kid's Sanzu lines connect and his appearance again changes. Kid is shown wearing a black cape similar to his father's, though he keeps his skull brooch. His pupils change to skull shapes, though they stay golden. His Sanzu lines are fully connected and are "floating" around his head. As soon as he has returned from the fight on the moon, the Sanzu lines settle on his hair once more, making him fully symmetrical.

Kid's most notable feature is the three white lines that cut across the left side of his hair, stopping in a completely straight line along the front and back of his head. They are the Sanzu Lines and they act as limiters to his power. When one or more line connects, his power increases exponentially and he becomes far stronger, and more dangerous. The lines, however, only connect when Kid is under the influence of Madness or determined enough. Kid greatly despises these lines because they throw off his physical symmetry. Mentioning these lines will send him into a fit, during which he curses his own existence, calling himself garbage. Kid also has a cowlick on the right side of his hair, but it seems he has not yet noticed it as he has made no effort to correct it.

In the third episode of the anime, Kid's soul is shown as a red color and has the three white Sanzu lines, representing his asymmetrical bangs. Later in the show, however, his soul is shown to be blue with a skull shape and the three Sanzu lines marking him as a Shinigami.

Another noticeable feature would be his eyes. Kid's eyes are two different shades of yellow, ringing around his pupil. The outside ring is a bright yellow while the inner ring is a dark yellow, similar to the color of gold.
