A crooked landlord who convinces Fantine to pay him to take care of her daughter, Cosette, while her mother goes to find work. He overworks and deprieves Cosette, as well as cheating his guests, though he claims to have saved the life of a General (actually Colonel Pontmercy, Maius' father) at Waterloo.
