Apparently a geneticist who was an original member of the Blue Project, Zorndyke inexplicably goes rogue and begins creating new races of sentient semi-humanoid beings by crossing human DNA with that of various other forms of life. It is his actions that set the stage for the species war between the humans and his "children" that the series depicts.
