Born Azami Nakamura, Azami was a student at Tootsuki Culinary Academy, a member of the Polar Star Dormitory's Golden Age, and a former First Seat of the Elite Ten. Sometime after graduation, Azami married the daughter of Senzaemon Nakiri and was legally adopted into the Nakiri household (mukoyoshi), taking the Nakiri surname. The couple later sired a daughter named Erina.

Sometime prior to the start of the story, he was cast out from the Nakiri family by Senzaemon and banned from having any dealings with the Tootsuki corporation or its partners. Azami's entire existence at Tootsuki Culinary Academy and involvement with the family was erased, leaving no trace of his history, save for a few newspaper articles and word-of-mouth knowledge.
