During the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), Yamazawa Seigo was sent to the Balkans as a war correspondent with the Russian army. At his own request, he became an active part of the Russian army, becoming the commander of a Russian platoon. He participated in the Siege of Pleven (Bulgaria) against the Ottoman Empire for which he received various decorations.
